D.El.Ed
Elementary teacher diploma · After Class 12
A two-year Diploma in Elementary Education that trains you to teach primary classes (1–5). It covers child development, teaching methods for languages, maths and environmental studies, and school internships. Courses must be recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE); some states still call it D.Ed or BTC.
After D.El.Ed, you can
How you get in
Class 12 with the minimum marks (most states accept any stream). Admission is through a state entrance test, such as Telangana's DEECET, or a Class 12 merit list, run by the state's SCERT or education department. After the course, CTET or a state TET (Paper 1) is needed for most primary teaching posts.
At a glance
- A 2023 Supreme Court ruling held that B.Ed alone does not qualify for primary posts, so D.El.Ed (or the four-year B.El.Ed) is the usual route to Classes 1–5.
- The diploma is not a degree: teaching Classes 6–8 or starting a B.Ed needs graduation first.
- Passing TET is only an eligibility condition; government posts come through separate drives that vary by state.
- NEP 2020 envisages the four-year integrated B.Ed as the minimum teacher qualification by 2030, so the diploma route may change.
In numbers
D.Ed is counted as a separate programme. Year-on-year D.El.Ed totals jump sharply in AISHE (likely reporting/classification changes), so only the 2023-24 split is shown. AISHE counts responding institutions only.
