What you’d do

A pre-primary teacher works with children aged about three to six in nursery, LKG and UKG classes. Private pre-schools, play schools and the pre-primary sections of schools hire them. A day involves circle time, play-based activities, early reading and number work, snacks and rest routines, and talking to parents at pick-up.

  • Plan play-based daily activities
  • Teach early letters, numbers and rhymes
  • Observe and record each child's progress
  • Keep children safe and update parents

How you get in

Schools and play schools hire directly, often asking for an early childhood or nursery teacher training diploma, a D.El.Ed or a degree, along with spoken English and a short demo class. Government pre-primary teaching posts are few and follow state rules.

At a glance

  • Pay at small play schools is often modest and varies widely.
  • NEP 2020 treats ages 3–8 as one foundational stage, which is adding pre-primary sections to schools.
  • Next roles: primary teacher, coordinator, or running a play school.
