Vocational / Skilling
After Class 12 · Learn a trade
Learning a specific, job-ready skill instead of — or before — a general degree. After Class 12 the main routes are ITI trade courses, apprenticeships with a stipend at a real workplace, and polytechnic diplomas. They are shorter and more hands-on than most degrees and lead to technician, trade and skilled-worker jobs, or to self-employment.
Inside Vocational / Skilling:

Airline safety and service work on board flights.
DGCA licence to fly aircraft professionally.
Two-year diploma to teach primary classes (1–5).
Two-year diploma to register as a pharmacist.
Diplomas to work as a nurse or community health worker.
Earn while you train at a real workplace (NAPS).

Not yet detailedHow you get in
Suits students who prefer hands-on learning, want to earn sooner, or aim for technician, trade or shop-floor roles. Class 12 pass students meet the minimum qualification for ITI trades; many states admit Class 12 Science or vocational students directly to the second year of a polytechnic diploma; apprenticeships need registration on the national Apprenticeship India portal.
At a glance
- Usually quicker to finish and cheaper than a degree, especially at government institutes.
- Recognition matters: check that an ITI is NCVT/SCVT-affiliated and a polytechnic is AICTE-approved.
- Many seats go unfilled, and placement quality varies widely by institute and region.
- Diploma holders can join B.Tech/B.E. in the second year through lateral entry.
