Chemical
B.Tech branch
Chemical Engineering covers how raw materials are turned into products at scale: mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid flow, heat and mass transfer, reaction engineering, process control and plant design, with lab work. It leads to refineries, fertiliser, petrochemical, pharmaceutical and specialty-chemical plants, to process-design (EPC) firms, and to research and government labs.
After Chemical, you can
How you get in
You choose the branch at counselling, after the entrance exam. JEE Advanced rank is used for IITs; JEE Main rank for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes — all allotted through JoSAA. State colleges use state counselling with a state CET (EAMCET, MHT-CET, KCET, WBJEE and others) or, in Tamil Nadu (TNEA), Class 12 marks. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is required. Some institutes also offer closely related B.Tech courses such as Chemical Technology through the same routes.
At a glance
- Plant roles are usually in industrial clusters, often with shift work at the start.
- GATE (CH paper) is used for M.Tech admissions and by several refining, gas and fertiliser PSUs.
- UPSC ESE has no Chemical stream, so government routes run mainly through GATE-based PSUs, BARC and state bodies.
- Some graduates move into software, analytics or management roles.
