What you’d do

A process engineer looks after how a plant unit runs — temperatures, pressures, flows, yields and energy use — and works out how to make it safer and more efficient. Refineries, fertiliser, petrochemical, specialty-chemical and pharmaceutical plants hire them. A day mixes checking unit data, working through problems with the operations team, and planning trials or small modifications.

  • Monitor unit performance and process parameters
  • Troubleshoot deviations with operations teams
  • Prepare mass and energy balances
  • Support safety reviews and plant trials

How you get in

Freshers usually join as graduate engineer trainees through campus placement at process companies. Refining, gas and fertiliser PSUs typically recruit through GATE (Chemical paper) followed by interviews. Some start as shift or production engineers and move into process roles.

At a glance

  • Work is at plant sites, often in industrial clusters away from big cities.
  • Common next roles: senior process engineer, technical services, process design, plant or production manager.
  • Hands-on plant years are valued if you later move to design or consulting work.
