Data Science
B.Tech branch
A B.Tech branch built on computer science, with extra depth in statistics, databases, data mining, machine learning, big-data tools and visualisation. Colleges run it under names such as Artificial Intelligence & Data Science, Data Science, or CSE (Data Science). Graduates work in analytics, data engineering, machine learning and general software roles.
After Data Science, you can
How you get in
You choose the branch at counselling, after the entrance exam. JEE Main rank is used for NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded institutes, allotted through JoSAA; JEE Advanced rank for IITs where the branch is offered. State colleges use state counselling with a state CET (EAMCET, MHT-CET, KCET, WBJEE and others) or, in Tamil Nadu (TNEA), Class 12 marks. Private universities may run their own tests. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is required.
At a glance
- Coursework overlaps heavily with CSE, and placements are usually open to the same software and analytics roles.
- Fresher data jobs often carry analyst titles; data scientist roles more often ask for experience or a master's.
- Government technical posts often list eligible branches by name (CSE, IT); check each notice for whether data-science degrees are included.
- Common next steps: a job, GATE → M.Tech, an MS abroad, or an MBA.
