Undergraduate statistics and mathematics degrees

Small, mathematics-heavy degrees at two specialised institutes. The Indian Statistical Institute offers a B.Stat (Hons) at Kolkata and a B.Math (Hons) at Bengaluru, each three years long. Chennai Mathematical Institute offers a four-year BS (Honours) in Mathematics, Mathematics and Computer Science, or Mathematics and Physics, with an exit option after three years.

How you get in

Class 12 with Mathematics. ISI admits through its own ISI Admission Test (held in May); INMO qualifiers can get extra seats. CMI admits through its own entrance exam (also in May), and strong performers in national olympiads may be exempted.

At a glance

  • Seats are few and the entrance tests are mathematics-heavy.
  • Graduates often continue to a master's or PhD, or move into data, finance and software roles.
  • ISI's BSDS (data science) programme has a separate admission route.
