Central universities (Delhi University, BHU and others) admit through CUET-UG scores in the relevant subjects; many state universities and their colleges admit on Class 12 merit or a state test. You usually choose the major — or a combination of two or three subjects — at admission. The Indian Statistical Institute's B.Stat (Hons) is a separate degree with its own entrance test.
At a glance
- Fewer colleges offer Statistics as a major than Mathematics or Physics.
- Analytics and data roles hire statistics graduates, especially with R, Python or SQL skills.
- UPSC's Indian Statistical Service accepts graduates with Statistics as a subject (or a master's); state statistics departments also recruit.
- IIT JAM (Mathematical Statistics paper), ISI's M.Stat and CUET-PG lead to master's programmes.
In numbers
Postgraduate level only; AISHE does not report B.Sc enrolment by major. Earlier years are not shown because statistics was classified under different discipline groups. AISHE counts only institutions that responded to the survey; coverage varies by year, so part of any change can reflect reporting rather than real growth.
