B.Sc major

A science degree in the fundamental laws of nature: mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, quantum mechanics, solid-state and nuclear physics, with lab work and supporting Mathematics. It leads to research, teaching, labs and technical roles, usually after a master's.

How you get in

Class 12 in the science stream, usually with Physics and Mathematics (required), plus Chemistry. Central universities (Delhi University, BHU and others) admit through CUET-UG scores in the relevant subjects; many state universities and their colleges admit on Class 12 merit or a state test. You usually choose the major — or a combination of two or three subjects — at admission.

At a glance

  • Most research and lab roles (at institutes and government science organisations) expect an M.Sc or PhD.
  • IIT JAM (Physics paper), JEST and CUET-PG lead to M.Sc and integrated PhD seats.
  • Physics graduates also move into data, software and finance roles that value quantitative skills.
  • Teaching needs a B.Ed for schools, or a master's plus NET/SET or PhD for colleges.
