Microbiology
B.Sc major
A three-year science degree in microorganisms — bacteria, viruses and fungi. You study microbial physiology and genetics, immunology, and medical, food, industrial and environmental microbiology, with lab techniques such as culturing, staining and sterile handling. It leads to quality-control and lab work in pharma, food and diagnostics, clinical research, and to an M.Sc.
After Microbiology, you can
How you get in
Class 12 in the science stream with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Central universities admit through CUET-UG scores; many state universities and their colleges admit on Class 12 merit or a state test, and private universities may run their own tests. You may take Microbiology as a single major or in a combination with Chemistry, Botany or Zoology. This is a separate route from NEET-based medical admissions.
At a glance
- Pharma, vaccine, food and dairy plants run microbiology QC labs that hire B.Sc and M.Sc graduates for testing and sterility work.
- Diagnostic-lab jobs often prefer a medical lab technology qualification (DMLT / BMLT); rules vary by state.
- Research and senior QC roles commonly expect an M.Sc; CUET-PG, IIT JAM and GAT-B lead to M.Sc seats.
- Teaching needs a B.Ed for schools, or a master's plus NET/SET or PhD for colleges.
