Biotechnology
B.Sc major
A three-year science degree that applies biology to products and processes. You study cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, genetic engineering and bioprocess techniques, with a lot of lab work. It is offered as a single major or as one subject in a combination, and leads to lab and quality work in biopharma, diagnostics and research, and often to an M.Sc.
After Biotechnology, you can
How you get in
Class 12 in the science stream, usually with Physics, Chemistry and Biology; some colleges also accept Mathematics in place of Biology. Central universities admit through CUET-UG scores; many state universities and their colleges admit on Class 12 merit or a state test, and private universities may run their own tests. This is a separate route from NEET-based medical admissions.
At a glance
- R&D and scientist roles usually expect an M.Sc or PhD; with a B.Sc, entry roles are mostly lab, production, QC support, clinical research or sales.
- GAT-B, IIT JAM (Biotechnology) and CUET-PG lead to many M.Sc seats.
- This is a different degree from the four-year B.Tech in Biotechnology.
- Teaching needs a B.Ed for schools, or a master's plus NET/SET or PhD for colleges.
