Class 12 in any stream. Central universities admit through CUET-UG; some language-focused universities hold their own test. Most programmes do not expect prior knowledge of the language, though a few admit beginners and advanced learners to separate streams.
At a glance
- Employers often look at certified proficiency levels (for example CEFR B2/C1, JLPT N2/N1) alongside the degree.
- Common work is translation, language processes in BPO/KPO firms, localisation, tourism and language teaching.
- A small number of graduates study each language, so classes are often small and jobs are concentrated in metro cities.
- Certificate and diploma courses at cultural institutes are a separate route to the same skills.
In numbers
Sum of the French, German, Spanish and 'Other Foreign Languages' rows at PG level (English excluded). AISHE does not report B.A. enrolment by language, so this shows the postgraduate level only. AISHE counts only institutions that responded to the survey; coverage varies by year, so part of any change can reflect reporting rather than real growth.
