Also known as: Operations Geologist
Studies rock samples and drilling data at oil and gas wells to describe the rocks being drilled.
What you’d do
A wellsite geologist works at oil and gas drilling sites, describing the rocks being drilled and reporting what they mean to the drilling and exploration teams. Oilfield service companies and exploration firms hire them, usually on rotation schedules at onshore or offshore rigs. Many start as mud loggers and move up into this role.
- Describe drill cuttings and cores
- Correlate data with expected geology
- Report formation tops and shows
- Support drilling decisions on site
How you get in
Most freshers enter oilfield work as a mud logger or data engineer with a service company, then move into wellsite geology after gaining rig experience. An M.Sc is commonly expected for direct entry.
