What you’d do
A web developer builds and maintains websites and web apps. IT service firms, product companies, agencies and many non-tech businesses hire them, and some work as freelancers. A typical day involves writing and testing code, fixing bugs, and working with designers and other developers.
- Build pages with HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Connect pages to forms, APIs and databases
- Fix bugs and keep sites fast and secure
- Update sites as content and needs change
How you get in
Freshers usually enter through campus placements, off-campus hiring tests or internships. Projects you can show, such as live websites or code on a public repository, often matter as much as the degree. Small firms and agencies are common first employers.
