VLSI Design Engineer
Designs and verifies the chips inside modern electronics.
What you’d do
VLSI design engineers design and verify the digital and analog circuits inside computer chips. They work in semiconductor companies and chip-design service firms, and the day involves writing hardware description code, running simulations, checking timing and working with other design and verification teams.
- Write and verify RTL (Verilog / SystemVerilog)
- Run simulations and chase timing issues
- Work with EDA tools through a long design cycle
How you get in
Many entrants have an M.Tech in VLSI or microelectronics, reached through GATE, or take a dedicated VLSI training course after B.Tech. Chip-design firms test digital electronics, Verilog and problem-solving in interviews.

At a glance
- Design verification is a common entry area for freshers.
- Common next steps: senior design or verification engineer, then lead or architect roles.
- Government incentives for chip design and manufacturing are expanding the sector.
