What you’d do

A veterinarian diagnoses, treats and prevents disease in pets, livestock and poultry. Many run their own clinic for companion or farm animals; others work in state animal husbandry departments, dairy cooperatives, farms and animal health companies. A clinic day involves examinations, vaccinations, minor surgery, prescribing treatment and farm visits.

  • Examine and diagnose sick animals
  • Prescribe treatment and give vaccinations
  • Perform minor and routine surgeries
  • Advise owners on feeding and care

How you get in

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, then a BVSc & AH: 15% of seats are filled through the Veterinary Council of India's all-India quota using NEET-UG, and the rest through state counselling. After registering, many new vets work at an established clinic or in a government post before opening their own practice.
