UX Researcher
Also known as: User Researcher · Design Researcher
Studies how people use products and services through interviews, tests and field visits.
What you’d do
A UX researcher studies how people actually use an app, website or service, so that designers and product teams can build something that works for them. Employers include software and internet firms, design studios, banks and consultancies. A typical day involves planning a study, interviewing or observing users, and turning notes into clear findings.
- Plan and run user interviews and usability tests
- Observe users in their own settings
- Turn findings into insights for design teams
- Write research reports and personas
How you get in
Freshers often start as research interns or junior researchers in design studios or product teams. A portfolio of two or three small studies (with a clear question, method and findings) matters more than marks. Many add a short course in UX or human-centred design, and some enter after a master's.
