Prepares land-use, master and local area plans for cities and regions, for authorities and consultancies.
What you’d do
An urban planner works out how land in a city or region is to be used: where housing, roads, parks, industry and services go, and how they connect. Employers include development authorities, municipal bodies, planning and infrastructure consultancies, and research organisations. A typical day mixes surveys and data work, GIS mapping, drafting plan documents and meetings with officials.

- Map and analyse data in GIS
- Draft plan proposals and planning reports
- Present plans to authorities and the public
How you get in
Freshers usually join planning or infrastructure consultancies as planning associates on government projects such as master plans and smart-city work. Government planning posts are filled through state PSCs or development authorities, and some ask for ITPI membership or an M.Plan.
