What you’d do

Textile colourists make sure dyed yarn and fabric come out in exactly the colour a buyer approved. They work in dyehouse labs at spinning and processing mills, dye manufacturers and export units, preparing lab dips, building dye recipes and fixing shade problems when bulk production does not match.

  • Develop dye recipes in the lab
  • Match shades using spectrophotometers
  • Prepare lab dips for buyer approval
  • Solve shade variation in bulk dyeing

How you get in

Processing mills and dye makers hire textile-chemistry graduates as lab trainees. A good eye for colour (no colour-vision deficiency), lab practice in dyeing and finishing, and knowledge of dye classes help at interviews.
