Stress Engineer
Also known as: Aerostructures Stress Engineer · Structural Analysis Engineer · FEA Engineer
Checks that aircraft structures can safely carry loads, using hand calculations and finite element analysis.
Starting salary: not added yet.
What you’d do
Stress engineers check that aircraft parts such as wing ribs, fuselage frames and brackets can carry the loads they will see in service without failing. In India this work is done mainly at aerospace engineering service firms working for global aircraft makers, at public-sector aerospace companies and at defence labs. The work is desk-based, using FEA software and classic hand methods.
- Run finite element analysis on aircraft parts
- Do hand calculations for joints and fasteners
- Prepare stress reports and margins of safety
- Work with design engineers on changes
How you get in
Engineering service firms hire freshers through campus drives and technical tests on strength of materials and structures, then train them on industry methods. Projects or a short course in FEA during the degree help at interviews.
