Also known as: Audio Engineer · Recording Engineer · Mixing Engineer
Records, edits and mixes music, voice and live sound for studios, shows and media.
What you’d do
A sound or recording engineer captures and shapes audio, from recording a singer in a studio to mixing a film song or running the sound desk at a concert. Employers include recording studios, film and OTT post-production houses, event companies, radio and podcast producers. A typical day involves setting up equipment, recording takes, and editing or mixing for hours.
- Set up microphones and recording sessions
- Edit and mix audio tracks
- Run sound for live events
- Maintain studio equipment
How you get in
Most start as studio assistants or live-sound crew, learning on the job. Musical training from a BPA helps with ear and timing; a short audio engineering course fills the technical gaps. A portfolio of mixed tracks is commonly asked for.
