What you’d do

A production planning and control (PPC) engineer decides what a factory makes, when, and with which machines and materials, so orders ship on time. Manufacturers of auto components, engineering goods and consumer products hire for this role. A typical day involves updating schedules, checking material availability, coordinating with shop-floor, stores and purchase teams, and tracking output.

  • Prepare daily and weekly production plans
  • Plan materials and track shortages
  • Balance machine and labour capacity
  • Monitor output against schedules

How you get in

Freshers often join manufacturing plants as graduate engineer trainees and are placed in PPC after a rotation, or move in from production roles. Excel skills and an understanding of shop-floor processes help.
