What you’d do

A physiotherapist assesses people with pain, injury or movement problems and treats them with exercise, manual therapy and electrotherapy. Employers include hospitals, rehabilitation centres, private clinics and home-care services, and many physiotherapists run their own practice. A typical day is a series of patient sessions: assessment, treatment, home exercise plans and progress notes.

  • Assess patients' movement and pain
  • Plan and give exercise-based treatment
  • Use electrotherapy and manual therapy
  • Track progress and adjust treatment

How you get in

Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, then a BPT through state counselling, university tests or merit. After the internship, freshers usually join hospitals, rehab centres or clinics as junior physiotherapists, and register with the state council where one exists.

At a glance

  • An MPT in a speciality such as orthopaedics, neurology, cardiorespiratory or sports is a common next step.
  • Many experienced physiotherapists open a clinic or offer home visits.
  • Income in private practice depends on patient numbers and location.
