What you’d do

A mining engineer runs the day-to-day work of getting coal, ore or stone out of the ground — opencast or underground — safely and to plan. Coal and metal mining companies, mining contractors and cement companies with captive mines hire them. A day starts with shift planning and safety checks, then supervising crews and machines, and ends with production and statutory records.

  • Supervise mining shifts and crews
  • Plan daily production and machine use
  • Enforce mine safety rules
  • Keep statutory mine records

How you get in

Coal India has recruited Mining Management Trainees through GATE (Mining paper) scores in several recent years; other mining PSUs and private miners hire through their own exams or campus placement. After joining, engineers build mine experience and sit the DGMS certificate exams to qualify for higher statutory posts.
