Mine Planning Engineer
Also known as: Mine Planner · Planning Engineer (Mining)
Designs mine layouts and production schedules from geology and survey data using mine-planning software.
What you’d do
A mine planning engineer decides where and in what order a mine will dig — the shape of the pit or the underground layout, the schedule, and the equipment needed — so that the mine meets its targets safely. Mining companies, mining contractors and mining consultancies hire them. Most days are spent at a computer with geology models and survey data, with regular visits to the mine to check plans against reality.
- Prepare pit or stope designs
- Build short- and long-term mine plans
- Estimate reserves with geologists
- Update plans from survey data
How you get in
Freshers usually start in mine operations and move to planning after some site experience; some companies and consultancies take freshers directly into planning cells. Training in a mine-planning package helps.
