Metallurgical Engineer
Also known as: Metallurgist · Process Metallurgist · Graduate Trainee (Metallurgy)
Controls and improves how metals are made and processed — steelmaking, rolling, casting or heat treatment.
What you’d do
A metallurgical engineer makes sure metals come out with the right composition, structure and properties — in a steel plant, an aluminium or copper smelter, a foundry, a forging shop or a heat-treatment line. Steel and non-ferrous producers, foundries, forging and automotive component makers hire them. A day involves checking process data and test results, solving defects, and adjusting process settings with the production team.
- Monitor process and product metallurgy
- Set and check heat-treatment cycles
- Investigate defects and failures
- Work with production and quality teams
How you get in
Freshers usually join as graduate or management trainees through campus placement at steel, non-ferrous and component companies. Steel and mineral PSUs recruit through GATE (Metallurgical paper) or their own exams, followed by interviews.
