Medical Writer
Also known as: Scientific Writer · Medical Communications Associate
Writes clear scientific and regulatory documents about medicines, devices and clinical studies.
What you’d do
A medical writer turns clinical and scientific information into clear documents: study reports, regulatory submissions, journal manuscripts, and educational material for doctors or patients. Employers include pharma companies, clinical research organisations and medical communications agencies. A typical day involves reading studies, drafting and revising text, and checking every statement against its source.
- Draft clinical and regulatory documents
- Summarise research literature
- Write educational content for doctors
- Check references and data accuracy
How you get in
Freshers usually enter as trainee or associate medical writers after a writing test. A short course in medical writing and a few writing samples (such as literature summaries) help. Clinical training in BDS or Pharm.D supports understanding of the content.
