Medical Coder
Also known as: Medical Coding Analyst · Clinical Coder
Converts medical records into standard diagnosis and procedure codes for billing and data.
What you’d do
A medical coder reads doctors' notes and reports and translates diagnoses and procedures into standard codes used for insurance billing and health records. In India, most coding work is done for overseas healthcare payers and providers through outsourcing and healthcare IT firms. A typical day is desk-based: reviewing charts and assigning codes to accuracy and productivity targets.
- Read clinical notes and reports
- Assign ICD and procedure codes
- Check codes against payer rules
- Flag unclear documentation
How you get in
Freshers usually join a medical coding company as trainee coders, and many first complete a coding course and a coding certification exam. Anatomy and medical terminology from a BDS, AYUSH or physiotherapy degree give a head start.
