Mechanical Design Engineer
Also known as: Design Engineer (CAD) · CAD Engineer · Product Design Engineer
Creates CAD models and drawings of machine parts and assemblies for manufacturing.
What you’d do
A mechanical design engineer creates 3D models and 2D drawings of parts and assemblies so they can be made in a factory. Automotive suppliers, machinery makers, engineering-services firms and product companies hire them. A day involves CAD modelling, checking tolerances, revising drawings and working with manufacturing and quality teams.
- Builds part models and detailed drawings
- Selects materials and tolerances
- Runs basic strength and fit checks
- Updates designs from shop-floor feedback
How you get in
Freshers usually enter as trainee or junior design engineers at engineering-services firms or manufacturers. Certification and hands-on practice in one CAD tool, plus a design project, help in interviews.
