What you’d do

Map data analysts keep digital maps accurate. They work at mapping and navigation firms, geospatial service companies and outsourcing centres, editing roads, buildings, addresses and points of interest by checking them against satellite imagery, street-level photos and field reports. A typical day is a queue of map edits or quality checks against a set of guidelines.

  • Edit road, building and place data on digital maps
  • Compare map layers with satellite imagery
  • Fix errors flagged by users or quality checks
  • Follow mapping style and accuracy guidelines

How you get in

Many entry roles are filled through walk-ins or aptitude tests at geospatial service firms, which train new hires on their own editing tools. A geography background helps with map reading and coordinate systems; a short GIS certificate (QGIS or ArcGIS) makes an application stronger.
