What you’d do

A livestock farm veterinarian keeps herds and flocks healthy and productive on commercial farms. Dairy farms, dairy cooperatives, poultry integrators and large livestock units hire them. Work focuses on herd health rather than single patients — vaccination plans, biosecurity, breeding, nutrition and treating outbreaks.

  • Treat and prevent disease in herds or flocks
  • Plan vaccination and biosecurity
  • Manage breeding and fertility records
  • Advise on nutrition and housing

How you get in

Freshers usually join a dairy cooperative, poultry integrator or commercial farm as a farm veterinarian or veterinary officer, sometimes after an internship there during the degree.
