Legal Counsel
Also known as: Legal Executive · Legal Officer · In-house Legal Associate
Handles contracts, compliance and legal queries for the company that employs them.
What you’d do
A Legal Counsel is a lawyer employed by one company rather than a law firm. Companies of many kinds hire them to keep business moving within the law. A typical day involves reviewing and negotiating contracts, answering legal questions from other teams, tracking compliance, and coordinating with outside lawyers on disputes.
- Draft and review contracts and agreements
- Advise teams on legal questions
- Track compliance with applicable laws
- Coordinate with outside law firms
How you get in
Most in-house roles hire lawyers with some years at a law firm or in litigation, though some companies take freshers as legal associates or trainees. Internships during the LLB and drafting experience help. Under Bar Council of India rules, a full-time salaried employee generally cannot practise in court at the same time.
