Assesses insurance proposals to decide whether to cover a risk and on what terms.
What you’d do
An underwriter reviews each insurance proposal and decides whether the insurer will accept the risk, and on what terms and premium. Employers include life, health and general insurance companies and their back-office centres. A typical day involves reading proposal forms, medical or property reports and financial documents, and recording decisions in the underwriting system.
- Review proposals and supporting documents
- Assess risk using company guidelines
- Decide cover, terms and loadings
- Coordinate with sales and medical teams
How you get in
Freshers usually join an insurer as an underwriting trainee or executive and learn the company's guidelines on the job. Clearing the Insurance Institute of India exams helps with progression. Health underwriting teams sometimes prefer candidates with a life-science or nursing background.
