Selects, installs, calibrates and maintains the instruments that measure and control plant processes.
What you’d do
An instrumentation engineer selects, installs, calibrates and maintains the instruments that measure pressure, flow, level and temperature in plants, and the control loops built on them. Employers include refineries, chemical and fertiliser plants, power stations, steel and pharma plants, and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms. A typical day involves loop checks, reviewing instrument datasheets and drawings, and fixing faulty instruments with the operations team.

How you get in
Freshers usually join as graduate engineer trainees in process plants, as trainee engineers at EPC or design firms (instrument datasheets, specifications and hook-up drawings), or with instrument makers and service companies. A plant internship and familiarity with P&IDs help.
