Hydrogeologist
Also known as: Groundwater Geologist · Hydrogeology Associate
Studies groundwater — where it is, how it moves and how it can be used or protected.
What you’d do
A hydrogeologist studies groundwater: where aquifers are, how much water they hold, and how pumping or pollution affects them. Environmental and water consultancies, NGOs working on water security, and infrastructure firms hire them. The work combines field surveys, data analysis and mapping, often for recharge, drinking-water or impact-assessment projects.
- Run field surveys of wells and aquifers
- Interpret water level and quality data
- Map aquifers using GIS
- Support groundwater and recharge plans
How you get in
Freshers usually join a water or environmental consultancy, or a water-focused NGO, as a field associate. An M.Sc with hydrogeology specialisation is common for analytical and modelling roles.
