HVAC Engineer

Designs and maintains heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for buildings.
What you’d do
Designs, installs and maintains heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems for offices, malls, hospitals, data centres and factories. Employers include MEP consultancies, HVAC contractors, equipment manufacturers and facility-management firms. Depending on the role, the day goes on heat-load calculations and duct drawings, or on site supervising installation, testing and commissioning.

How you get in
Freshers usually join an HVAC contractor or MEP firm as a site or design trainee, or an equipment maker as a sales or service engineer. A short HVAC design course covering heat-load calculation and duct sizing is a common add-on. Student membership of ISHRAE gives access to workshops and industry contacts.
