Home Care Nurse
Also known as: Home Health Nurse · Private Duty Nurse · Patient Care Nurse
Provides nursing care at home to elderly, bedridden, post-surgery or chronically ill patients.
Starting salary: not added yet.
What you’d do
A home care nurse looks after patients in their own homes: older people, bedridden patients, people recovering from surgery and those with long-term illness. Home healthcare companies, nursing agencies and hospital home-care units hire them, and some families hire nurses directly. A shift involves medicines, injections and dressings, monitoring vital signs, preventing bed sores and keeping the doctor and family informed.
- Give medicines, injections and dressings
- Monitor vitals and report to doctors
- Care for tubes, catheters and bed sores
- Teach family members basic care
How you get in
After the diploma or degree and State Nursing Council registration, nurses apply to home healthcare companies or nursing agencies. Most employers prefer some hospital experience first, especially in ICU or post-operative care.
