Heritage Tour Guide
Also known as: Tourist Guide · Heritage Walk Leader · Monument Guide
Leads visitors around monuments, museums and historic sites, explaining their history and context.
What you’d do
A heritage tour guide takes visitors around forts, temples, old city quarters and museums, explaining their history in an engaging way. Work comes from tour operators, travel agencies, hotels, heritage-walk groups and direct bookings, often on a freelance basis. A day may involve several walks, a lot of standing and walking, and adapting the story to each group.
- Lead guided walks at monuments and sites
- Research and prepare site narratives
- Manage group timing, safety and queries
- Coordinate with tour operators and hotels
How you get in
After a B.A. History, most guides complete a Ministry of Tourism or state tourism guide training and certification, then start by assisting senior guides or working with tour operators and heritage-walk groups. A foreign language widens the client base.
