Food Product Developer
Also known as: NPD Executive · R&D Executive (Food)
Creates and improves food products, from recipe trials to scale-up on the factory line.
What you’d do
Food product developers design new foods and beverages or change existing ones, for taste, cost, nutrition or shelf life. Food and beverage companies, ingredient suppliers and contract manufacturers hire them. The work moves between a pilot kitchen or lab, tasting panels and factory trials.
- Formulate and test new recipes
- Run sensory and shelf-life trials
- Scale recipes up for production
- Check products against FSSAI standards
How you get in
Freshers usually join as R&D or new product development trainees, sometimes after starting in quality control. Internships in a food plant or R&D lab, and a grasp of FSSAI standards and labelling rules, help.
