Firmware Engineer
Also known as: Embedded Firmware Engineer · Embedded Software Engineer
Writes low-level code that runs directly on hardware chips inside devices.
What you’d do
Writes the low-level code that runs directly on chips inside devices — the software that starts a board, drives its sensors and peripherals, and handles updates. Employers include semiconductor companies, consumer-electronics, automotive and IoT product firms, and engineering-services companies. A day involves writing C code, reading datasheets and register maps, and debugging on real hardware.
- Writes drivers and device code in C
- Brings up new boards and chips
- Debugs with oscilloscopes and debuggers
- Optimises code for memory and power
How you get in
The usual route is campus hiring into a semiconductor, automotive or engineering-services company, or a trainee role at a product startup. Strong C, computer-architecture basics and personal projects on microcontroller boards matter most at interviews. A post-graduate diploma in embedded systems is a common bridge for graduates of other branches.

At a glance
- A close cousin of embedded systems engineering; many job ads use both titles.
- Growth path: firmware engineer → senior → lead or architect, or a move into embedded Linux, kernel or security work.
- Bugs can be hard to reproduce, so careful testing is a large part of the job.
