What you’d do

Analyses a company's numbers — revenue, costs and cash flow — to help managers plan budgets, track performance and make decisions. Employers include company finance teams, banks, consulting firms and the global capability centres (GCCs) of multinational companies in India. Most of the day is spreadsheet work: building forecasts, explaining variances against budget and preparing management reports.

  • Builds budgets and forecasts
  • Analyses costs and revenue trends
  • Prepares reports for management
  • Supports month-end review

How you get in

Freshers typically join as analysts in a company finance team, a shared-services centre or an FP&A (financial planning and analysis) team, often through campus placement. Strong Excel, a clear grasp of the three financial statements and basic modelling are usually tested. An MBA (Finance) or a professional course can help move into more analytical work.

  • Many entry roles are in shared-services and GCC teams supporting overseas offices.
  • Early work can be repetitive reporting before it shifts to planning and analysis.
