What you’d do

Builds the computer systems hidden inside products — cars, appliances, medical devices, meters and industrial controllers — combining microcontroller hardware with the software that runs on it. Employers include automotive suppliers, consumer-electronics and industrial-automation firms, and engineering-services companies. A day mixes writing C code, testing it on a development board and debugging with lab instruments.

  • Write firmware in C/C++
  • Work close to the hardware and datasheets
  • Debug on real boards

How you get in

Freshers usually enter through campus hiring at engineering-services or automotive firms, or as trainees at smaller product companies. Hands-on microcontroller projects, a working knowledge of C and the basics of communication protocols (UART, SPI, I2C) carry weight in interviews. Some take a post-graduate diploma in embedded systems design (offered by C-DAC and others) before applying.

At a glance

  • Overlaps heavily with firmware engineering; the two titles are often used interchangeably.
  • Growth paths: senior engineer → technical lead or architect, or a move into embedded Linux, automotive software or IoT.
  • Much of the work in India is in engineering-services firms designing for overseas clients.
  • The learning curve is steep at first; hardware–software bugs take patience to track down.
