What you’d do

An electro-technical officer (ETO) is the ship's specialist for electrical and electronic systems — power generation, motors, automation, and navigation and communication equipment. Shipping companies and ship-management firms hire ETOs for merchant vessels. Like other officers, they work on contracts at sea followed by leave ashore.

  • Maintain generators, motors and switchboards
  • Repair automation and control systems
  • Look after navigation and communication equipment
  • Keep maintenance records and safety checks

How you get in

Engineering or diploma graduates in electrical, electronics or related branches complete a DG Shipping-approved ETO pre-sea course, then sail as a trainee ETO before certification and promotion to ETO.
