What you’d do
A drug safety associate records and assesses reports of side effects from medicines. Pharmaceutical companies and the service firms that run safety work for them are the main employers. A typical day involves reading case reports, entering them into a safety database, coding them, and checking them against reporting timelines.
- Enter adverse-event cases into safety databases
- Check cases for completeness and seriousness
- Code events using medical dictionaries
- Help prepare periodic safety reports
How you get in
Freshers are usually hired straight after a pharmacy degree into case processing roles, often through campus drives or walk-ins. A short course in pharmacovigilance can help but is not always required. Attention to detail and clear English writing matter in the selection tests.
