Operates dialysis machines and monitors patients with kidney failure during treatment.
What you’d do
A dialysis technologist runs haemodialysis sessions for people whose kidneys no longer work well, under a nephrologist's supervision. Employers include hospitals, standalone dialysis centres and public-private dialysis programmes. A typical day involves preparing machines, connecting and monitoring patients through sessions of several hours, and cleaning and maintaining equipment.
- Prepare and run dialysis machines
- Monitor patients during sessions
- Maintain water treatment and equipment
- Follow infection-control protocols
How you get in
Graduates usually join a hospital or dialysis centre as a technologist after an internship during the degree. Shift work, including early mornings, is common because centres run several sessions a day.
