What you’d do

A counsellor helps people work through personal, emotional, academic or career concerns through structured conversation. Employers include schools, colleges, NGOs, hospitals, corporate wellness programmes and private practices. A typical day involves one-to-one sessions, keeping confidential notes, and running workshops or referring clients to other professionals.

  • Holds one-to-one counselling sessions
  • Assesses concerns and suggests support
  • Keeps confidential session notes
  • Refers serious cases to specialists

How you get in

A bachelor's degree alone is rarely enough to counsel independently; most counsellors complete a master's in psychology or counselling, plus supervised practice or a certification. Freshers often start as assistant or school counsellors.
