Company Secretary
Also known as: CS · Compliance Officer · Practising Company Secretary
A qualified CS who manages corporate law compliance, board matters and filings for companies.
What you’d do
A Company Secretary keeps a company on the right side of company and securities law. Listed and larger companies hire one in-house, and others work as practising CSs serving several clients. A typical day involves preparing board and shareholder meeting papers, writing minutes, and making filings with the Registrar of Companies and stock exchanges.
- Organise board and shareholder meetings
- File returns and forms under company law
- Maintain statutory registers and minutes
- Advise on governance and compliance
How you get in
Join ICSI's CS course: clear CSEET (some graduates and CA/CMA qualifiers are exempt), then the Executive and Professional levels, and complete the required practical training. A B.Com or law background helps but any stream can take the course. Freshers usually start as an assistant or junior CS; practising independently needs a Certificate of Practice from ICSI.
