What you’d do
A community health nurse provides nursing care and health education outside hospitals: in villages and urban wards, public health programmes, schools and patients' homes. Employers include state health departments under the National Health Mission, primary health facilities, NGOs and home-care services. Days involve health screening, immunisation and mother-and-child follow-up, chronic disease checks and home visits.
- Visit patients for care at home
- Run immunisation and health camps
- Teach families about health and hygiene
- Keep visit and programme records
How you get in
After a B.Sc Nursing and State Nursing Council registration, freshers apply to state National Health Mission recruitment for CHO and programme posts, or join NGOs and home-care services. CHO posts usually need the community health certificate, which some states provide after selection.
