Typical entry

What you’d do

A CFD (computational fluid dynamics) engineer uses software to simulate how air, gas or liquid flows around or through a product — a wing, an engine part, a car body or a cooling system. Employers include aerospace and automotive companies, engineering services firms, simulation software vendors and research labs. Most of the day goes into setting up models, running simulations on workstations or clusters, and checking and reporting results.

  • Build meshes and set up flow simulations
  • Run CFD cases and check the results
  • Compare simulations with test data
  • Report findings to design teams

How you get in

Freshers join engineering services or simulation firms as trainee analysts, often after a project or internship in CFD. Research and specialist roles commonly ask for an M.Tech or MS in fluid or thermal engineering.
