What you’d do
A blasting engineer designs the drilling and explosive patterns that break rock, and supervises blasts so the rock breaks as planned without harming people, machines or nearby homes. Mining companies, quarry and tunnelling contractors, and explosives manufacturers (for technical service at customer sites) hire them. A day involves marking and checking drill holes, overseeing charging, firing the blast and measuring the results.
- Design drill-and-blast patterns
- Supervise charging and firing
- Monitor vibration, fly-rock and fragmentation
- Maintain explosives records
How you get in
Freshers join mining companies or contractors in drill-and-blast sections, or explosives manufacturers as technical service engineers, through campus placement or direct hiring. Handling and firing explosives at mines needs the certificates and permissions set under mine and explosives rules.
